Additional Information

Unparalleled System Quality

No other system in the state – or even the nation – has achieved this combination of recognition for quality, safety, technology and clinical excellence. Detroit Medical Center's successful implementation of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) places it in the 99th percentile of U.S. Hospitals in EMR adoption. This level of implementation - Physician Documentation, full Clinical Decision Support System and full Picture Archive Communication System - indicates that DMC is using electronic collaboration and document review to a nearly unsurpassed degree, in support of patient safety.

DMC hospitals have also received American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) MAGNET Recognition designated for nursing excellence - recognized as one of the highest distinctions a hospital can receive. DMC Children’s Hospital is the only Children’s Hospital in Michigan and DMC Detroit Receiving is the only adult specialty hospital in Detroit with this award.

Three DMC hospitals – DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University/Hutzel Women’s Hospital and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital – met the stringent national standards of the Leapfrog Group, the nation’s premier quality ranking agency, to receive honors as top hospitals in the nation for patient quality and safety 2010. This is the fourth consecutive year that DMC Harper University Hospital and the third consecutive year that DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital were selected as Leapfrog Top Hospitals based on their quality and safety scores.

Wellness and Balance

DMC understands that a work/life balance is crucial for students, and provides amenities to make sure that students are taking care of themselves at the same time they are caring for our patients. DMC offers the following Duty Hour Compliance:

  • Maximum 16 hours of continuous duty
  • One day off in seven
  • Ten hours between shifts
  • Maximum 80 hours per week

Third year students at DMC facilities also receive a monthly dining stipend, for use at our new Healthy Options Cafeterias, and FREE membership to the Brasza Fitness Center, conveniently located right on the midtown campus.

Commitment to Education

Students at DMC benefit from curricular innovations, access to medical staff, and a high level of communication with student representatives and clerkship directors. DMC is committed to making the educational experience a two-way process of communication, learning as much from students about how to create an ideal system, as students learn about how to become the best in their chosen field. DMC residency programs are AGCME accredited; ensuring that the foundation our students build will best serve the patients of the future.

Education Partnerships

As a regional home for both the Wayne State University – School of Medicine and the Michigan State University Osteopathic School of Medicine, Students working at DMC frequently have the unique opportunity to continue learning and working with the physician-professors in their school, building a greater knowledge base and allowing them to “hit the ground running.
