Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency
The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency is a 13 month long residency program in the field of neurologic physical therapy. As part of the Detroit Medical Center, the RIM program provides unique offerings including rotations in various settings such as inpatient rehabilitation, acute care at a level 1 trauma center, outpatient rehabilitation, spinal cord injury specialty center, pediatric rehabilitation and more. The program is a full-time paid position including benefits.
The Neurologic PT Residency Program seeks to educate physical therapy residents in all aspects of neurologic physical therapy. The program will provide specialized clinical training through the use of didactic instruction, practical experience, direct mentoring and unique educational opportunities. The program will include a continuum of care from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient rehabilitation, with clinical focus on diverse neurologic deficits within a multidisciplinary team environment.

In addition, RIM’s Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program will support evidence based practice. The program will integrate research into practice on a day to day basis and residents will participate in all levels of research including knowledge translation, journal clubs, article reviews and the opportunity to do original research.
Potential Candidate Requirements
Applicants to the program must meet the following requirements:
- Have graduated from an accredited DPT or tDPT program
- Hold or be eligible for a Michigan Physical Therapy License
- Have a minimum of 240 hours (6 week clinical rotation) as a student or clinician in a neurologic PT setting
- APTA member
- Submit an application through RF-PTCAS
- Submit 2 letters of recommendation (1 from current or past supervisor)
- Submit current Curriculum Vitae
- Submit a personal statement
Selected applicants will be invited to complete the interview process to be conducted in the fall.

The faculty for the Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency will consist of a number of therapists from Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s staff. Faculty is made up of content experts or ABPTS board certified specialists. Meet some of our faculty:
Melissa McCourt, PT, DPT, NCS, CBIS - Neurologic PT Residency Director

Melissa McCourt received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University in 2008. She worked as a Clinical Physical Therapy Specialist in both acute care and acute rehabilitation settings at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit.Additionally she worked as a Clinical Specialist and a Senior Physical Therapist on the Neuroscience unit at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). Presently she works as the Manager of Rehabilitation Services on the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit of RIM.
In 2018, Dr. McCourt received the designation of Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. She is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist through the Brain Injury Association of America. Stemming from her work as a research assistant in the Mobility Research Laboratory, Dr. McCourt has been a co-author and published multiple papers, posters, abstracts and articles in numerous journals.
Dr. McCourt has been working as an adjunct faculty at Wayne State University in the physical therapy department since 2013. She has assisted in educating students in the areas of neurology, acute care rehabilitation and clinical medicine.
Jared Kurdunowicz, PT, DPT, NCSProgram Coordinator / Curriculum Chair
Board Certified Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy
Clinical Physical Therapy Specialist, Outpatient Neuro – Main Campus
Jared is a Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapist at Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). He has been a clinician since 2020. Jared joined the team as the first Neuro PT Resident, since graduating, he has remained with our outpatient team and transitioned into our curriculum chair role. He received both his Bachelors of Science in Movement Science from the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology. He received a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University in 2019. He enjoys treating all neurologic diagnoses, but his greatest interest in traumatic, acquired, and degenerative brain injuries. His grant funded research is in sleep dysfunction in brain injury. He leads RIM’s Brain Injury Continuum.
Jared is currently adjunct faculty at Wayne State University in the physical therapy program. He lectures and teaches as part of the neurologic curriculum.
Andrew Selby, PT, DPT, NCSProgram Coordinator / Practice Chair

Clinical Physical Therapy Specialist, 6th Floor RIM Neuroscience Unit
Dr. Andrew Selby is a Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapist at Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). He has been a clinician since 2021, spending time mostly in Brain Injury and Stroke rehab, but is actively involved in research involving neurodegenerative populations and clinician practices. He received his Bachelors of Health Science from Oakland University and his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Wayne State University. His current clinical focus is treating individuals with neurological injuries and neurodegenerative diseases as a part of the Neuroscience Department at RIM. His clinical interests revolve around the treatment of ataxia, minimally conscious state and and stroke.
Dr. Selby is also a part time faculty Professor at Wayne State University in the physical therapy program. He lectures and is a teaching/lab assist for the Neuro curriculum, Therapeutic Modalities, and Clinical Decision Making.

The RIM’s Neurologic Physical Therapy Residency Program curriculum is delivered in a variety of modes including online learning modules, in person lectures, assigned readings and journal articles, participation in journal clubs and experiential learning with interdisciplinary team members including physicians, nurses, neuropsychologists, orthotists, prosthetists, and others.
Residents will contribute to and skillfully implement evidence-based clinical practice through research and educational opportunities within the program. They will share their knowledge and expertise, in a professional and ethical manner, with students, fellow clinicians and the community they serve.
