Detroit Receiving is the first hospital in Detroit to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center, by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Receiving’s stroke team has also been recognized by the American Stroke Association’s “Get with the Guidelines” advisory team. Receiving is one of the few hospitals in the area with 24/7 access to the “clot-busting” drug tPA, as well as an intra-arterial clot buster and the newly FDA-approved Merci Clot Retriever.

These medical breakthroughs, combined with the team’s expertise, make Detroit Receiving a leader in the care and teaching of stroke. When a patient arrives at Detroit Receiving with symptoms of stroke, the medical response is instantaneous. The stroke team is notified, and the patient is immediately ushered into an emergency department module, where assessment and treatment begins at once. This prestigious certification is granted to stroke care programs that follow strict national standards and guidelines proven to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.

Neurologists in the Primary Stroke Program are leading the way in Michigan and nationwide in lowering the risk of stroke, treating acute stroke, preventing recurrent stroke, and helping patients regain skills lost during stroke. At Harper, a vascular neurologist (a neurologist who specializes in stroke) is always available — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — for emergency care of patients with acute stroke.

In addition, as part of an academic research program, Harper patients benefit from leading-edge research into new stroke treatments.
