Stroke Care At DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital
DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, reflecting the highest level of competence for the treatment of serious stroke events.
The Comprehensive Stroke Center certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association and affirms that the hospital addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Detroit Receiving has met the highest level of competence to address the full spectrum of stroke care and reflects the extensive training and collaboration of our multidisciplinary care teams.
This achievement further demonstrates to the communities we serve our unwavering commitment to ensuring they receive the highest level of stroke care.
The standards we follow, combined with the team’s expertise, make Detroit Receiving a leader in the care and teaching of stroke. When a patient arrives at Detroit Receiving with symptoms of stroke, the medical response is instantaneous. The stroke team is notified, and the patient is immediately ushered into an emergency department module, where assessment and treatment begins at once. This ability to swiftly diagnose and treat patients distinguishes Detroit Receiving’s stroke program and decreases the likelihood of permanent disability for the patient.
Stroke Care at DMC Harper University Hospital
The Primary Stroke Program at Harper University Hospital, in partnership with Wayne State University, is one of the nation’s top stroke treatment and research programs. The program recently earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. This prestigious certification is granted to stroke care programs that follow strict national standards and guidelines proven to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.
Neurologists in the Primary Stroke Program are leading the way in Michigan and nationwide in lowering the risk of stroke, treating acute stroke, preventing recurrent stroke, and helping patients regain skills lost during stroke. At Harper, a vascular neurologist (a neurologist who specializes in stroke) is always available — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — for emergency care of patients with acute stroke.
In addition, as part of an academic research program, Harper patients benefit from leading-edge research into new stroke treatments.
Stroke Care at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital
By demonstrating compliance with standards for health care quality and safety, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital earned designation as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital’s stroke team is comprised of highly skilled and trained physicians and nurses. Along with state-of-the-art diagnostic brain imaging capabilities the intensive care unit is skilled in handling neurological emergencies along with the hospital’s inpatient stroke care unit. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital also has around the clock access to neurological specialist at DMC Harper University Hospital through video robots located in their Emergency Department.
All of these services ensure that patients coming to the DMC will have highly-specialized stroke care from the moment they enter our Emergency Departments, during their inpatient stay, and through post-acute rehabilitation.
