At DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, we are prepared for the unexpected when you’re expecting. Whether you need emergency maternity care or general labor and delivery services when your OB/GYN or midwife is not available, Huron Valley Sinai's Harris Birthing Center has OB hospitalists, who are specialized OB/GYN physicians, and available at the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to care for you.

The Harris Birthing Center at DMC Huron Valley–Sinai Hospital has been recognized as a Level II maternal care verified facility by The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) Verification program, in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). This achievement demonstrates DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality care for expectant mothers, including those with moderate to high-risk pregnancies.

Our Facility

Our 22 spacious, all-private birthing suites are designed to make mothers and their families feel right at home. Our comfortable rooms include many special amenities that mothers and their families have asked for, including sleep chairs for their support persons, personal refrigerators, large flat screen televisions, and internet access. Other features include:
- Wireless monitoring
- Essential oils
- Early labor walking paths and activity stations
- Clear drapes for family-friendly C-sections
- Nitrous oxide for labor pain and comfort management

Post Delivery Options
We offer a range of support after you deliver your bundle of joy including lactation and pelvic pain/incontinence services. To learn more, visit the General Obstetrics Services page.
Outpatient Lactation Clinic
If you need breastfeeding assistance after you leave the hospital, our experienced lactation consultants are available to provide guidance on how to hold and nurse your baby properly and encourage skin-to-skin contact. They can also assist with various problems that may arise while breastfeeding, such as:
- Tips to help your baby latch properly
- Techniques for issues like low or high milk production, painful nipples and more
- How to pump and store breast milk
- Support for underweight babies or those who aren’t gaining weight well
- Assistance with babies who refuse to breastfeed or drink from a bottle
No referral needed.

Labor and Delivery Options
Every expecting mother wants to have a personalized birthing experience that meets her needs. The Harris Birthing Center is pleased to offer a variety of birthing options:
- Wireless Monitoring – move more freely while accurately monitoring vitals
- Showers During Labor – available in all of our private labor/delivery rooms
- Birthing Ball – can help women get into positions that may alleviate discomfort, help position the baby for delivery, prevent back strain, and encourage the progression of labor
- Music Therapy – patients may choose to bring and play soft music during their labor

DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital now offers a home-like birth experience with the peace of mind of award-winning obstetric care.
Located within the Labor & Delivery unit, the natural birthing suite is a personal and serene space for you, your partner and your baby. The suite includes a bath tub and shower, aroma and music therapy, dim lighting and traditional labor aides (birthing ball, Peanut ball and CUB). We also encourage laboring moms to ambulate/walk to ease discomfort during labor. Our interactive walking path, which begins and ends at our birthing center, includes eight activity stations allowing expectant mothers and their partners to scan QR codes that reveal videos tips and new activities to try.
Our experienced team of physicians, nurses and support staff has the knowledge to intervene in any emergent situation, if needed. We will keep you and your baby safe by:
- Monitoring vitals intermittently
- Monitoring baby’s heartbeat intermittently
- Palpating contractions
Is natural birth right for you? The natural birthing suite is suitable for expectant mothers who have:
- Low risk pregnancy
- No fetal complications
- No maternal complications

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic
The Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital provides exceptional, personalized care to address any complications of pregnancy. Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists, also called perinatologists, focus on the diagnosis and treatment of women who are at high risk for problems during pregnancy. These providers are obstetricians who have also completed additional years of training in high-risk pregnancy, and have advanced skills in medical complications during pregnancy, higher risk pregnancy-specific conditions, obstetric ultrasonography, prenatal genetics, prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapies.
Backed by the knowledge and skill of board certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine providers, the clinic works with your obstetric provider to coordinate prenatal care along with specialized testing and procedures to help ensure the best possible outcome. The clinic offers Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist consultation as well as prenatal testing and procedures using some of the latest innovations in technology and standards of care – physician referral needed.

OB Nurse Navigator
Our dedicated obstetrics (OB) nurse navigator plays a pivotal role on a mother’s pregnancy and birth team to help mothers feel informed, prepared and cared for throughout their pregnancy and beyond.
Our nurse navigator is here from pregnancy and birth to beyond, offering:
- Appointment coordination and services, such as scheduling doctor visits, imaging, follow-ups and lab work, in addition to organizing lactation support or mental health visits, when needed
- Support with discharge planning, such as reviewing care instructions and advising on follow-up appointments
- Resources, such as transportation, housing support or parenting services
- Education and guidance, as a registered nurse, our navigator can help mothers manage symptoms and learn warning signs to watch for
Special Care for Special Circumstances
The Harris Birthing Center provides a Special Care Nursery staffed with experienced NICU nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatologists who are available 24/7 to care for newborns in need of more dedicated attention in the first few days after birth.
Children’s Hospital of Michigan is consistently recognized by U.S News and World Report as one of the top children’s hospitals in the country. As a part of the DMC, our patients have direct access to their Level IV NICU, the highest level of NICU care available, in addition to a comprehensive list of pediatric specialists, offering easy continuity of care between obstetric and pediatric services.
PANDA One (Pediatric and Neonatal Dedicated Ambulance), the state's only pediatric and neonatal dedicated transport service, is on-call to provide specialized transportation for children and newborns that need to receive care at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

Meet Your Care Team

- Obstetric (OB) House Physician – in house, 24/7 to care for women before, during and after delivery
- Medical Doctor of Anesthesiology (MDA) – specialize in anesthesia care, pain management and critical care medicine
- Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) – advanced practice nurse in house, 24/7 to administer and monitor patients receiving anesthesia and other medications
- Neonatologists and Mid-Level Providers – on staff and available for the treatment and care of newborn babies requiring specialized care
- Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) physician – on staff, specially trained to diagnose, monitor and treat pregnancy complications in women and their unborn children
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner – in house, 24/7 to care for babies
- Nurse Navigator – a registered nurse (RN) that offers personalized support throughout pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care
- Registered Nurses (RNs) – obstetric nurses have been trained with neonatal resuscitation, advanced cardiac life support and electronic fetal monitoring
- Lactation Consultant – registered nurses (RNs) that help moms to breastfeed as well provide prenatal education and preparation for expecting couples
- Obstetric Associate (OBA) – assist in the care of moms and babies in collaboration with physicians and nurses
- Unit Clerk/Surgical Tech – responsible for greeting families, directing traffic in and out of the unit, answering the phone and processing charts
We offer several different classes:
- Birthing center classes to help you prepare for childbirth and life with new baby.
- Bringing baby home take a close look at newborn behavior, nutrition, and hygiene.
- Breast feeding classes and lactation consultant support
Tours
Looking to tour our birthing center? Tours are available on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m. Only 5 couples allowed per tour (no children please) so preregistration is required.
