One of the most exciting advancements in neurorehabilitation is the robotic exoskeleton—a wearable, battery-powered suit that helps individuals with spinal cord injuries or neurological conditions stand, walk, and move again.

What Is a Robotic Exoskeleton?

 Robotic exoskeletons are motorized devices worn over clothing, designed to assist with basic movements like standing, walking, and sitting. Using a combination of sensors, motors, and real-time feedback, these suits help retrain the body and improve function.

Users typically need some upper-body strength and may use crutches or a walker for additional support during training.

RIM is proud to offer the Ekso Bionics exoskeleton as part of our outpatient therapy program. Ekso is used under medical supervision for:

Home Use: ReWalk & Ekso Indego Training

Some exoskeletons such as the ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton and the Ekso Indego have been FDA approved for daily, independent use at home or in the community. Both devices are supported by RIM’s Certified Training Program, ensuring patients are fully prepared to use their exoskeleton safely and effectively in daily life.

RIM offers training and support for these two leading models:

1. ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton

  • Provides powered motion at the hip and knee joints
  • Enables upright walking, turning, stair climbing, and more
  • Mimics natural gait patterns with customizable walking speeds

2. Ekso Indego

  • A lighter, more compact option for personal mobility
  • Adjustable assistance based on user strength and function
  • Includes Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to activate paralyzed muscles

Both devices are covered by Medicare and the Veterans Health Administration.
