DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital

Detroit Receiving is staffed by several chaplains who can help members of any faith with spiritual care. The Interfaith Meditation Room is located on Level 2, on the main corridor near the hospital's main Information Desk. This quiet space allows patients and families a peaceful room for spiritual reflection and thoughtful solitude. Ask the Surgical Lounge receptionist to place the call for you or call (313) 745-3000 and a staff member will page a chaplain for you.

DMC Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women's Hospital

Spiritual Care Services provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, family members, friends and staff members at Harper University Hospital and Hutzel Women’s Hospital. Chaplains and volunteers are available 24 hours a day when you need:

  • Someone to listen to you
  • Open-hearted conversation about hope, gratitude, fear, connection and meaning
  • A calm presence
  • Prayers and blessings
  • Connection to your faith and referrals to community resources

Services

  • 24-hour confidential care
  • Care and support during times of illness, injury, crisis, and loss
  • Rituals such as baptism, communion, blessing and anointing of the sick
  • Faith community support available through staff and volunteers who are: Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, Muslims, and Seventh-day Adventists
  • Assistance contacting a faith community, minister, priest or rabbi
  • Consultation with the healthcare team
  • Inspirational books and pamphlets
  • Bereavement support and counseling
  • Interfaith opportunities for worship, celebration, learning and reflection
  • Interfaith Reflection Center

Patients, family members, visitors and employees of any faith are welcome in the Interfaith Reflection Center. This peaceful sanctuary is available 24 hours a day for prayer, reflection, and meditation. It was built by donations from Harper University Hospital employees and physicians.

An on-call chaplain is available 24 hours a day.

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital

Services available for your healing and hope include:

  • Someone to listen to you
  • Prayer or blessing
  • Loss and grief support
  • Consultation on processing the teachings of your religious tradition regarding medical decisions, ethics, and matters of conscience
  • Life transition rituals, such as sacraments, last rites, and memorial services
  • Collaboration with local clergy to enhance patient care and provide a continuity of support beyond the hospital walls
  • Patient/family referrals to local faith communities
  • Referrals for long-term counseling

Also available are Bibles, Qur'ans, and other religious literature and "Comfort Closet" items such as inspirational tapes and books, as well as games and puzzles to help pass the time.

Religious Facilities:

DMC Sinai-Grace is pleased to have available three different venues to serve as quiet spaces for spiritual reflection and thoughtful solitude*:

  • Muslim Prayer rooms for males and females are located on 1 Main, near the cafeteria
  • The all Faith Chapel is on 1 Main, near the cafeteria
  • Hebrew Prayer room is on 1 Main, near the cafeteria

*To respect the needs of all those using these rooms, we ask that any conversation be maintained at a low volume. The rooms are available 24 hours a day.

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital welcomes and encourages visits from patients’ clergy. We recognize that the support provided by trusted faith leaders to those who are hospitalized is essential to the healing process. We will do whatever we can to facilitate your ministry when you come to visit. However, we ask that you follow our established guidelines listed below:

Badges

Visiting clergy members are required to wear a Visiting Clergy ID badge every time they are in the hospital.

Procedure to obtain a badge and courtesy parking pass:

  1. Complete an Application Form (contact Rev. Kim Mahaffey at [email protected] or call (313) 966-3452)
  2. Return the application to the Spiritual Care Services office for authorization, located in the Lourdes Building, Room L-338.
  3. Take your authorization form to the Parking and Badging Office in Human Resources, located on the 1stfloor of the Lourdes Building.
  4. A picture ID badge will be furnished which will provide access to the DMC Sinai-Grace visitor parking lot.
  5. Please park in the visitor's lot and enter through the front lobby.

Visiting Procedures

Please learn the visitation guidelines for each hospital unit. These have been developed to protect our patients from infection and stress and to ensure a restful, healing environment. While patients are in the hospital, their medical care is our top priority.

Visits to some patients are restricted for infection control or other reasons. We will maintain privacy and confidentiality for them. Some restrictions are essential for compliance with state and federal safety and privacy regulations. Exceptions to visitation regulations may be made only at the discretion of the patient, nursing staff, and security personnel.

The Visiting Clergy Badge is a privilege offered in good faith under the assumptions that the minister will visit only members of his or her congregation. The minister will maintain professional conduct appropriate to the role. Any breach of this understanding may lead to revocation of this privilege.
