Peer Mentoring Services
The Peer Mentoring Program at Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) is a consumer-to-consumer support service that connects patients newly adjusting to life with a disabling condition with trained mentors who have successfully navigated the rehabilitation process and are living life to the fullest. These peer mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and firsthand insight to help others regain their independence and confidence.
Peer Mentors:
- Work with individuals to provide coping strategies
- Share information and awareness about the disability community and culture
- Help promote personal growth by sharing their own experiences and explaining how they have coped with the "ups and downs" of living with a disability
- Help people with disabilities achieve a level of empowerment where they, too, will become peer mentors
Discussion topics may include:
- Disability awareness
- Advocacy
- Stress management
- Communication skills
- Personal growth
- Self determination
- Independent living
- Employment skills
- Community resources
