Student Shadowing

Detroit Medical Center welcomes students age 16 and older as well as, residents, nurses, physicians and others who are interested in healthcare related studies to allow participation in shadowing. In order to ensure that safeguards are in place to protect the confidentiality of patient information (PHI), specific guidelines are required.

 

GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  1. All shadowing requirements require advance notice (minimum of a 4 week) and approval by Department Manager or Physician whom the shadower wishes to follow.
  2. Non-staff individuals and students age 16 and over and as well as, nurses, physicians and others who are interested in healthcare related studies, and are on break from a formal medical training program or who are not affiliated with Detroit Medical Center Hospitals are limited to 5 days of shadowing.
  3. Shadowing activity will be limited to one preceptor/sponsor or practitioner and to one hospital procedural area or department.
  4. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY SHADOWING INDIVIDUAL BE INVOLVED IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES OR CLINICAL CARE. 
  5. All non-staff individuals and students are required to complete the following materials and return to the [email protected] 14 days prior to their shadowing activities:

Failure of the non-staff individual/student to adhere to those requirements will result in immediate

dismissal from the hospital and may expose them to additional penalties as required by law.
