Visiting Medical Student Policy

  1. All rotation requests must go through the GME office for the following facilities. The department coordinator and the program director cannot schedule rotations.
  • Sinai Grace Hospital
  • Harper/Hutzel Hospital
  • Detroit Receiving Hospital
  • Children’s Hospital
  • Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan
  1. A current affiliation agreement between your school and the Detroit Medical Center is required. Please contact your school to find out if an affiliation agreement in in place. If there is not an affiliation agreement in place, you must apply through VSLO  Visiting Student Learning Opportunities
  2. Applications for elective rotations must be submitted no later than 60 days in advance of the requested start date. Any application received after the 60 days will not be considered.
  3. Elective request must be on DMC’s elective application. The application must be sent to the email address on the application [email protected]. Please DO NOT carbon copy anyone on the email.
  4. Please allow 30 days for elective requests to be reviewed. We will provide confirmation of your rotation request within 30 days of receiving your request. Please DO NOT contact us prior to the 30 days. If the student does not receive correspondence by day 31 this means your request was denied.
  5. Once approved for the rotation, students will receive an onboarding link from New Innovations. Students should start the onboarding process as soon as you receive the link. Failure to complete the onboarding process 31 days before the start of the rotation will result in the rotation being cancelled.
  6. Visiting students may complete a total of 3 rotations at our sites, depending on availability.
  7. Any cancellations or changes to scheduled rotations must be made at least 30 days before the rotation start date.  Any cancellations or changes after 30 days will not be honored.
  8. Frequent changes or cancellations of rotations by a student may result in refusal to schedule future rotations at our sites.
  9. Failure to show up for a rotation is considered unprofessional behavior and we reserve the right to cancel any future rotations for that student.
  10. At this time we do not accept International Medical Students.
  11. All pediatric rotations, neurosurgery, trauma surgery and surgery intensive care are 4 week rotations and  are reserved for 4th year medical students.
  12. The DMC reserves the right to cancel any rotation. These occurrences are extremely rare and only happen under extenuating circumstances.
