“My RIM therapy supported the healing process.” - Raymond In March 2024, Ray Skeins and his wife Kathleen were in Aruba enjoying a tour on four-wheel-drive electric scooters. Ray collided with another rider at 30 miles per hour and was thrown off his scooter. 

“He was taken to a local Aruba hospital where I was told he had a traumatic brain injury that was possibly fatal. Ray was in a coma, and they wouldn’t let us travel home to Michigan because it was too far. Instead, they recommended further care at a hospital in Miami,” says Kathleen.

After five weeks in Florida, Ray was medically stable to travel back to Michigan where he was admitted to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) inpatient hospital. Ray did daily physical, occupational and speech therapy. His therapists could see how determined he was and really challenged him with his mobility and speech.

“It was obvious that they really cared about Ray. They treated him like a friend or family member. They wanted his recovery as badly as he did. He challenged them and they challenged him,” says Kathleen.

Within a week, he was discharged and continued outpatient therapy at RIM’s Novi Center where he continued to make incredible strides. “He came so far in such little time and the speech therapists made amazing changes in his voice and his cognitive rehabilitation. Miracle workers for a miracle recovery,” adds Kathleen.

Less than six months after his accident, Ray returned to driving and work as a director of strategic planning. Kathleen says they are so grateful for the RIM team that helped them through this journey and for the amazing care he received.
