“RIM is why he’s able to do the things he can today.” – Evan’s mom Kerri

Evan says it’s likely that his helmet, backpack, shirt and pants saved his life during a motorcycle accident in September 2024.

“I was heading north on I-75 before Davidson and I have no idea what happened, someone cut me off or turned in front of me and made me lose control. I was taken to DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital where I was in a coma for about two and a half weeks,” says Evan..

Evan had eight surgeries to repair shattered bones in his right leg, arms, pelvis, clavicle and nose. His injuries also included a collapsed lung and brain bleed. When he was medically stable, he was transferred to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).

Not able to walk or really understand, Evan’s mom, Kerri said that the very first day therapists had him up and moving. For the next two and a half months, Evan had physical, occupational and speech therapy every day. 

“He made such tremendous progress. RIM is phenomenal. He was 21 and had a whole life in front of him...they pushed him, I pushed him, and he pushed himself. If a patient didn’t come down for therapy, they offered the time to Evan. He left there able to walk using a leg brace. He had some function back in his hands and he could talk,” says Kerri.

Evan continued with outpatient therapy at RIM and is able to walk unassisted and has improved hand and arm mobility. He is driving again and looks forward to going back to work as a mechanic.

“RIM is why he’s able to do the things he can today. They had so many different techniques – if one didn’t work, they’d try another. They showed us things we could do with him. They were so supportive of him and our entire family,” says Kerri

Evan says he’s a firm believer in therapy and would encourage anyone to go to the RIM.
