“I was told he likely wouldn’t survive. If he did, he would never wake up,” – Cody’s mom Jennifer.

Cody s was heading to a Mother’s Day celebration in 2024 on his motorcycle when he was hit by a pickup truck.

“I got a call that his head hit the pickup, and he was launched 30 feet in the air. By some miracle he started breathing again when the ambulance arrived,” says Cody’s mom, Jennifer.

At the hospital, doctors immediately removed the left side of his skull to reduce brain swelling.  The right side of his skull was shattered in pieces. He had broken ribs, a punctured diaphragm, lacerated kidney and spleen along with multiple hip and finger fractures and injuries. “I was told he likely wouldn’t survive. If he did, he would never wake up,” says Jennifer.

While still on a ventilator, he was moved to a larger hospital. Cody was minimally conscious, unable to move or communicate.  After three weeks, he was transferred to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).

“The staff is incredible. An employee who was leaving for the day saw us coming in, she turned around and showed me where everything was in the hospital. She did that on her own time.  They are all so giving. Whatever we needed, they were there. They really care.”

Cody spent eight weeks in RIM’s inpatient Neuroscience Unit. He did daily physical, occupational and speech therapy. Within three weeks, he was fully conscious and actively participating in therapy. Cody went from being bedridden and nonverbal to walking and talking today.

Cody continues with outpatient therapy at RIM and prays to God every day to thank him for his recovery. He hopes to eventually go back to work, drive and live on his own.

“RIM employees are like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” says Jennifer. “They’ve got such a great attitude and understand exactly what to do… they’re just wonderful. We have them to thank for Cody’s success.”
