“My therapists at RIM really stuck with me.” - Joi

Joi was on the fast track – a corporate supervisor, friends, family and travel. Her days were full and evenings even fuller as she was launching a golf apparel company and talking to overseas vendors at all hours.

“I was extremely busy and not taking care of myself. No sleep, no exercise, eating out every meal. My blood pressure was so out of control that my dentist refused to work on my teeth. I had an episode of slurred speech and disorientation…I was a stroke ready to happen.”

One morning Joi woke up unable to see, straining to talk and couldn’t move. Her worst fears came true, she was having a stroke. Once she was medically stable, she was referred to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). Joi spent five weeks as an inpatient where therapists worked on getting her walking, her arm moving, and improving her eyesight.

“I was a top college softball player, an athlete, and now you’re telling me I have to rebuild myself? That was a lot for me to take in but my therapists at RIM really stuck with me. They were always encouraging me, giving me extra attention… they were friendly and ready to help me to improve.”

Joi couldn’t believe that RIM had a putting green. She would put on one of her Fairway Golf Culture shirts and actually have fun while doing her therapy. During her stay, she also committed to a new diet. RIM always made sure she received the foods that were part of her new nutrition plan. 

After being discharged, Joi continued outpatient therapy with RIM. Today, she’s back walking, working on her arm mobility and her eyesight is improving.
