“Within five months I was back to work. The whole team at RIM is amazing.´- Jasmine

“Our duty is your protection” is a common motto for firefighters. Detroit firefighter Jasmine  was doing just that at the scene of a downed power wire when a car ran right over the wire.

“It acted like a slingshot snapping back at me. I fell and landed on my left knee. I thought it was just sprained, but after an MRI and surgery, I found out that my ACL, LCL and meniscus were all torn and repaired,” says Jasmine.

Jasmine stays incredibly fit by going to the gym every day to do cardio, squats, lifting and swimming, so this injury was devastating. Not only because she lost mobility and muscle, but she had to rely on others for help.

Just six days after her surgery she started outpatient rehab at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) clinic in Harper Woods. The first few weeks of therapy focused on getting her muscles engaged again. She then moved onto a bicycle where her arms did most of the pedaling and from there she progressed very quickly.

“Within five months I was back to work. My doctors said it’s normally nine. I have to say I’m pretty stubborn and wanted to get healed ASAP,” says Jasmine.

Jasmine also credits the team at RIM. Even for someone as strong as her, she says the workouts were killer. She appreciates how hard they worked her because that’s how she got back on her feet so quickly. She says her therapists were so positive and gave her so much reassurance.

Jasmine has returned to full-duty and is back doing her daily gym routine. She says she’s mindful of her knee but hasn’t found anything she can’t do.

“The whole team at RIM is amazing. I would highly recommend them!”
