“RIM was such an amazing place, special people work there.” ´- Andrea

The summer of 2023, Andrea was at a Detroit Tigers game. She had a broken foot but decided to go using a knee scooter to keep her foot up.

“Everything was fine, but as we entered the gates, I told my boyfriend I didn’t feel good and then I fainted.”

The Detroit Police and Comerica Park staff rushed to help, and a bystander called an ambulance. The stadium staff thought it was heat stroke but the EMTs weren’t sure and took her to the hospital. At the hospital she coded three times and was eventually diagnosed with blood clots in her lungs.

“I am incredibly lucky that someone called that ambulance, because they got me to the hospital quickly. I had surgery to put in a device that helped get more oxygen into my blood and I was put on dialysis because the medication was shutting down my organs.”

About two weeks later, Andrea transferred to DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).  She couldn’t walk because of the trauma to her body and she had trouble remembering words.

“RIM was such an amazing place, special people work there. All the physical, occupational and speech therapists really push you, even on hard days, to get back to who you were before.  My relearning to walk was a little slow because my foot was still healing. I was released two weeks later, doing much better but using a wheelchair.”

Andrea continued with therapy at home and when her foot was healed, she returned to RIM’s outpatient Cardiac Rehab program.

“It’s an amazing program. I went two times a week for four months. The therapists monitor you while you’re working out, provide nutrition counseling and are just so knowledgeable.”

Today, Andrea is back to her old self and attending lots of Tigers games. She says when anyone asks if she knows a good rehab place, she always recommends RIM.
