“RIM really gave me so much confidence to move forward.” - Raymond

A summer day in June of 2022 started out as just another typical day, but it quickly turned into something far more serious, leaving Raymond to fight for his life.

“My arm started hurting. I had stomach issues. My family said I was acting strangely, so they called an ambulance. I remember waking up at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital and being told I had an infection that was spreading throughout my body.”

Sepsis develops when the body has an extreme response to an infection. It moves fast and can be fatal if not dealt with quickly. Doctors ended up amputating both of Raymond’s legs below the knee, his right arm and several fingers on his left hand to stop the infection. A few weeks later, he had a bone graft from his hip to replace dead bone on the roof of his mouth.

Raymond says he was in absolute disbelief that all this was happening. While at Sinai-Grace, therapists from DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan began treating him until he was medically stable enough to transition to outpatient therapy at RIM’s Northwest Center.

“My medical team was so supportive. It took me a while, but thanks to my therapists and family, I realized I’m still alive and just have to keep going for my three kids.”

Through physical, occupational and speech therapy, Raymond got stronger and ready for prosthetic limbs. Raymond says therapy was just so positive and had such a good vibe, he pushed himself as much as he could so that when he got his prosthetic legs and arm he would be up and ready. 

“I’m a mechanic. I can still do everything I used to, just a little differently. RIM really gave me so much confidence to move forward. Today, I show everyone my prosthetics and how great I get around in them. I couldn’t have done it without RIM or my family.”
