Shannon’s Story*
After
Before
At the young age of 30 and a mother of 2 boys, Shannon Maxson should have been much more vibrant and active, playing games with her boys and enjoying their energy. However, at 283 pounds, this was difficult. She was diagnosed with borderline hypertension and diabetes and suffered from constant pain in her back, knees, ankles and hips. Shannon tried several diets and weight loss programs and was unsuccessful. After doing some research on weight loss surgery, Shannon decided to see Dr. John Webber, bariatric surgeon at Harper University Hospital. Together, they decided that the Gastric Bypass procedure was the best method for her and on January 15, 2007, Shannon had her surgery. "My experience at Harper was wonderful," says Shannon. "The stay was much shorter then I had expected, the nurses were excellent and Dr. Webber and the residents were extremely thorough." Immediately following her surgery, Shannon's blood pressure was normal and she no longer needed medication for diabetes. Only eight months later, Shannon had lost 100lbs and to date has lost a total of 130lbs. "I'm more active and have more energy," says Shannon. "Now I can do things outside with my kids and I don't get tired. I even play on a softball team and enjoy going to social gatherings." Shannon now uses her personal experiences to help other individuals who struggle with their weight as a bariatric clinical coordinator with DMC Harper University Hospital.
