Detroit Medical Center’s Organ Transplant Center at DMC Harper University Hospital is known for performing successful kidney transplants in the highest-risk patients. Our expert team of transplant specialists use sophisticated, life-saving techniques to improve the life of each and every transplant patient, no matter what organ is needed.

Our Transplant Program offers both living and deceased donor transplantation. The transplant team recognizes the complex needs of transplant donors and recipients — both before and after surgery — and is recognized for its medical expertise and caring manner. Additionally, the Organ Transplant Center is a central resource for all transplant-related issues. After your transplant we provide regularly scheduled visits for follow-up care. We encourage you to use our health care services and counseling following your transplant, it will make your transition back to your normal activities much easier. Additionally, the pharmacist will meet with you to discuss the medications you will be taking. Transplant patients require life-long treatment with medications to suppress the immune response, called immunosuppressive therapy.

Specialized Physicians/Surgeons

Depending on which organ you will be transplanting, there are different physicians and surgeons who may join your medical care team. For example, a urologist will join your kidney transplant team or a cardiologist will be a member of your heart transplant team. While these are just examples, it is possible for a specialist to join your transplant team.

Pre-Transplant Coordinator

Coordinates all activities leading up to surgery, including pre-transplant testing and education.

Outreach Coordinator

The program liaison for dialysis units, physician offices and community activity. Manages transplant candidate referrals, and assists patients with initiating the transplant process.

Post-Transplant Coordinator

Coordinate all transplant related activity after transplant surgery, including lab monitoring and continued education.

Transplant Social Worker

Conduct psycho-social assessments of renal disease patients and their potential donors. Educates patients, family members and loved ones about the transplant process and provides the transplant patient with emotional support as well as resources for medications, information about lifestyle changes following transplant and transplant care.

Nutritionist

Nutrition is an important part of a balanced, healthy diet. For patients suffering from failing organs or other health issues, it is increasingly important to maintain a proper diet. Our nutritionist tailors a diet plan to your specific needs, taking into account your specific nutritional needs as determined by your condition.

Transplant Financial Coordinator

Specializes in the areas of insurance and reimbursement, including all billing related to the transplant program. This member of the team also obtains benefit verification and written authorization from third parties.

Medical Assistant

Provides clinical and clerical support to the transplant physicians and nurse coordinators along with drawing blood, scheduling appointments and helping with insurance verification and referral needs.

Medical Transcriptionist

We have a medical transcriptionist on team who not only confirms data and maintains records, but also conducts special projects, greets visitors and schedules appointments.
