Routine Well-Woman Care

Advances in technology and surgical instruments are making minimally invasive gynecologic surgery an option for more and more women. Many procedures that once required large incisions and an open surgical field can now be performed through a few tiny incisions or no incisions at all. Compared to traditional open surgery, patients who have minimally invasive procedures generally spend less time in the hospital and have a faster recovery with less internal scarring, less pain and a lower risk of complications.

The minimally invasive gynecology experts at DMC Women and Infant Services practice patient-directed care — helping each patient understand her options and make informed decisions. We offer laparoscopic procedures, which use a long, slender device called a laparoscope. Your physician inserts a laparoscope through a small incision in your abdomen, allowing it’s camera to display images of the internal organs on a TV monitor for your physician to perform the procedure. Many gynecological procedures can be performed using a laparoscope or hysteroscope, another minimally invasive surgical tool that uses no incisions to remove fibroids, polyps, and other lesions.

Birth Control

Women today have a wide variety of highly effective, long-term and permanent birth control options. The experts at DMC Women and Infant Services can help you determine which birth control option is best for you.

A popular long-term option is the use of intrauterine devices (IUDs), which are small, flexible devices made of metal or plastic that prevent pregnancy when inserted into the uterus. IUDs are inserted without incisions, can be used for up to 10 years and are highly effective. The primary benefit of an IUD is that it can be removed if birth control is no longer desired.

Permanent options are also available, with minimally invasive laparoscopic tubal ligation (or tubal occlusion) being the most common permanent birth control procedure in the United States. However, several new hysteroscopic procedures — which do not require abdominal incisions — are gaining popularity.

Bladder Control & Incontinence

Urogynecology is the study and treatment of female pelvic medicine, pelvic floor reconstruction and incontinence.

Urogynecologists combine expertise from both urology and gynecology — focusing on the female urinary and reproductive systems and the pelvic floor.

Women with weakness of the pelvic muscles or tears in the connective tissue may begin to have problems controlling their bladders and bowels. These are called pelvic floor disorders, and can often lead to other medical issues, such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, overactive bladder, and emptying disorders.

11 Million American women suffer from urinary incontinence, the leakage of small amounts of urine or frequent and sometimes uncontrollable urination. Fortunately, it’s usually treatable and often curable. The urogynecology experts at DMC Women and Infant Services can help diagnose and treat your incontinence, which can be caused by a variety of sources. We offer innovative treatments, listening to your story and running advanced tests before determining the best course of treatment for you.

Chronic Pelvic Pain

The pain can be unbearable, many times worse than a urinary tract infection. One woman described it as a knife twisting inside her bladder. As if that weren’t bad enough, women often visit eight or nine doctors before it’s accurately diagnosed. Known as Interstitial Cystitis (IC), the condition affects about 1 million Americans, most of them women. Thankfully, doctors at DMC Women and Infant Services are skilled in diagnosing and treating the condition.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Reconstruction

Pelvic organ prolapse is a medical condition that occurs when the normal support of the vagina is lost, resulting in “sagging” or dropping of the bladder, urethra, cervix and rectum. As the prolapse of the vagina and uterus progresses, women can feel bulging tissue protruding through the opening of the vagina.

About 35% of women will develop some form of pelvic organ prolapse in their life. Although prolapse can often be treated with nonsurgical therapies, it sometimes requires pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. Consisting of several complex procedures for correcting prolapse, pelvic floor reconstructive surgery can be quite beneficial in restoring the normal structure and function of your pelvic organs. DMC Women and Infant Services physicians have the expertise and skill for these complex procedures, and are happy to talk with you about which treatment option is best for your situation.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

Specially-trained physical therapists who are trained in pelvic floor health for women, men and children are available through the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan at select RIM locations in Sterling Heights, Detroit, Novi, Commerce, and Oak Park, Michigan. The RIM Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Program utilizes advanced techniques and technologies to ensure the most comprehensive and effective services.

Abnormal Bleeding & Fibroids

They can be as small as a pea or as large as a pumpkin, but these growths on the smooth muscle of the uterus are extremely common. About 40% of women over 35 have fibroids, and some women don’t know it. African-American women are especially at risk, with 70% of African-American women over 35 getting diagnosed with fibroids.

No one really knows what causes fibroids, but thankfully they are almost always non-cancerous, or benign. Symptoms include pain, heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure and problems during pregnancy. In fact, fibroids are the number one cause of hysterectomies in the United States. DMC Women and Infant Services offers the latest treatments, including minimally invasive Hysteroscopic myomectomy, hysterectomy, uterine ablation, uterine artery embolization, and more.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition in which multiple, small cysts grow on the ovaries. However, you could be diagnosed with PCOS without having a single cyst on your ovaries. Symptoms include irregular menstrual cycle, elevated androgen hormone levels, visible cysts on the ovaries, and women with PCOS are often overweight or have abnormal cholesterol levels. Commonly treated with weight loss therapies, diabetes medications, controlling cholesterol, ovulation induction drugs, and birth control pills, DMC Women and Infant Services physicians are able to diagnose and develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
