Neuromuscular Disease Care

Detroit Medical Center is known around the world as a leader in research, diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases. In fact, patients travel to DMC from 21 different countries and 47 states.

DMC Harper University Hospital and Wayne State are home to several National Institute of Health-funded research programs and top neuromuscular care clinics, including:

  • The world’s largest inherited neuropathy clinic, the Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Clinic and Research Center.
  • Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinic
  • An internationally recognized electromyography (EMG) lab

Additionally, the neuromuscular care program was recently named one of only 7 international Centers of Excellence by the GBS/CIDP Foundation. GBS/CIDP stands for Guillain Barré Syndrome/Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, which are treatable immune-mediated and inflammatory disorders.

The CMT, ALS and MDA clinics take a multidisciplinary approach to care — offering patients a variety of therapeutic resources including: respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and physiatry. Patients often have access to innovative treatments and medications during clinical trials. Learn more at the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology.
