Family Medicine

Doctors who specialize in family medicine cover a wide variety of needs. They care for people of all ages, both male and female, to help diagnose many types of illnesses or diseases. Because your family medicine doctor sees you through different phases of life and illnesses, he or she has a whole person perspective that can be helpful.

Family medicine doctors complete a three-year residency that includes training in:

• Pediatrics
• Obstetrics and gynecology
• Internal medicine
• Internal medicine
• Psychiatry
• Neurology
• Surgery
• Community medicine

One of the roles of family medicine is to be involved with preventative medicine through checkups, health assessments, immunizations, recommending screenings and providing guidance for a healthy lifestyle. Your family medicine doctor can also help you manage chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes.

Internal Medicine – What Does It Mean?

Doctors of internal medicine, or internists, are medical specialists who have had special training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in adults, except for women’s reproductive issues.

• At least three of their seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training are focused on diseases that affect adults.
• Doctors of internal medicine treat the whole person, not just internal organs
• Internists are specially trained to solve puzzling diagnostic problems, handle severe chronic illnesses and treat patients with multiple illnesses or conditions.

Some internal medicine physicians receive additional training in a subspecialty. The following are subspecialties recognized by the American Board of Internal Medicine:

• Cardiology (heart and blood vessels)
• Endocrinology (endocrine system/hormones)
• Gastroenterology (digestive diseases)
• Hematology (blood and blood-forming organs)
• Infectious disease (biological agents such as virus, bacterium or parasite)
• Medical oncology (cancer)
• Nephrology (kidneys)
• Neurology (brain)
• Pulmonology (lungs and the respiratory tract)
• Rheumatology (muscles and/or joints)

Medical Education

The internal medicine department at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital trains 48 medicine residents and 70 residents from other departments yearly. In addition, approximately 150 Wayne State University (WSU) medical students and 50 WSU and University of Detroit-Mercy physician assistant students receive training throughout the year.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program has a full five-year accreditation by the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). In addition, the hospital’s internal medicine residents have had a 100 percent graduation rate for the past five years. This statistic puts DMC Sinai-Grace in the top 10 percent in the country and is the only hospital in the state that can make this statement.

Pediatrician

A pediatrician is likely the first doctor you see after your baby is born, and cares for children up to young adulthood. Like a family medicine doctor, pediatricians treat a variety of illnesses to include physical, mental and social health. Pediatricians often assess their patients’ health and make recommendations to other specialties as needed.
