DMC Names Specialist in Chief of Neurosurgery

richard-d-fessler-mdDETROIT — The Detroit Medical Center has named Richard D. Fessler, M.D., to the role of Specialist-In-Chief of Neurosurgery for the health system.

As Specialist and Chief of Neurosurgery, Dr. Fessler will provide medical direction and leadership for the Department of Neurosurgery, playing a vital role in the continued growth of the program. He assumes the role that was being filled an interim basis by DMC Neurosurgeon, Dr. Steven Ham.

Dr. Fessler will also serve as Chief of Neurosurgery at DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Dr. Fessler is a distinguished endovascular neurosurgeon and researcher, specializing in complex vascular abnormalities of the brain, neck and spinal cord. His areas of expertise include endovascular surgery and cerebrovascular surgery for the treatment of aneurysms, carotid artery disease and stroke.

“Dr. Fessler brings a unique blend of skills and experience to the DMC. As we embark on a new era for our neurosurgery program, Dr. Fessler will be integral in our efforts to build upon the program’s rich history and tradition of providing our community with advanced, high quality and compassionate care,” says Audrey Gregory, Ph.D., R.N., Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit Medical Center.

Dr. Fessler comes to the DMC from Ascension Michigan, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, and Medical Director of the health system’s Stroke Network and Telemedicine Program. Dr. Fessler developed several statewide programs which provide state-of-the-art care to stroke and aneurysm patients. Prior to joining Ascension, he served as Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.

Dr. Fessler earned his of Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences from the University of Michigan, and his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed a Neurological Surgery residency at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University, and a Neuroendovascular Surgery Fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a Fellowship in Cerebrovascular surgery at the Nagoya School of Medicine, Nagoya, Japan.
