DMC Harper-Hutzel and Sinai-Grace Recognized by Leapfrog for Safety in High Risk Deliveries

May 12, 2017

Expecting MotherA new national report by the Leapfrog Group has recognized only four hospitals in Michigan, two from the DMC, to be equipped to safely handle high risk deliveries.  DMC Harper-Hutzel and Sinai-Grace Hospitals were among the small group and the only hospitals in Detroit. This is a great accomplishment as only 23% of hospitals nationwide meet the standards per the report that was released last Thursday from the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group, is a Washington D.C.-based non-profit representing employers and other purchasers striving to improve health care quality and safety.

The Leapfrog standards recommend hospitals deliver at least 50 very-low birth weight babies annually or maintain a lower-than-average morbidity rate. It also requires at least 80 percent of mothers receive steroids before delivery to help develop the baby's lungs. Hospitals must volunteer their data to the Leapfrog Group and in Michigan, 13 out of 19 hospitals with labor and delivery services reported their high risk delivery data for 2016. Of those 13 hospitals only four fully met the standards. This recognition is evidence of the great work our Women and Infant Services teams do to provide safe quality care for our patients.  For the complete list, click here.
