School of Histotechnology
The School of Histotechnology at DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The School of Histotechnology is located on the Kresge Campus at 4707 St. Antoine, SG34, Detroit, MI 48201.
The program accepts 4-6 students each year for 32 weeks of clinical training. The program starts in January and ends in August. However, the program reserves the right to change the start and completion dates.
Program Mission Statement
The mission of the DMCUL School of Histotechnology is committed to serving the health care needs of the community, state and nation by providing quality of education for the Histology profession.
The overall objective of the program is to provide adequate and meaningful experience for the student in order to prepare his/her to perform with competence. On completion of the program, the student will be able to accession tissue specimens, prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, perform special stains, and identify tissue structures and staining characteristic. In addition, demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with laboratory personnel and other health care professionals. The school provides every graduate with a corticated of completion and an opportunity that meets or exceeds the requirements necessary for ASCP BOR certification exam.
The Committee of Allied Health and Education, January 1978 (revised 1979) dedicate the program to Fair Practices in education as set. Veterans are also encouraged to apply. Program Goals
The overall goal of the program is to provide adequate and meaningful experiences for the student in order to prepare him/her to perform with competence. The objectives include the Histotechnician will be able to perform routine histologic procedures:
- Preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examinations, including all routine procedures
- Assisting with gross examination and frozen section procedures in histopathology
- Identifying tissue structures and their staining characteristics
- Frozen section procedures in histopathology
- Performing preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments or referring to appropriate sources for repairs
- Recognizing factors that affect procedures and results, and taking appropriate action within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated
- Performing and monitoring quality control within predetermined limits
- Applying principles of safety
- Demonstrating professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professional, and with the public
- Recognizing the responsibilities of other laboratory and healthcare professional and interacting with them with respect for their jobs and patient care
- Recognizing and acting upon individual needs for continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence

ACADEMIC:
Prerequisites for admission to the program are as follows:
Prerequisite courses combination of 30 hours in biology, math, and chemistry
Associate degree in Applied Science or higher.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum overall grade point average of 2.8/4.0 with a minimum grade point average of 2.8/4.0 in all science courses must be achieved by the applicant. Grade points are calculated using grades from ALL colleges/universities the applicant attended.
FOREIGN DEGREE:
If an applicant is basing his/her eligibility for the program on a degree from a foreign university, the official transcript evaluated by an evaluation agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services Inc. The evaluation must show U.S. degree equivalency and subject breakdown. Subject grades submitted with the application.
The foreign degree must be equivalent to a degree with a major in either chemistry or biology equivalent in the U.S. and have completed 30 credit hours in biological science in the United States or Canada
All of the aforementioned course work must meet specified requirements in NAACLS Essentials and should be subject to review and evaluation.
PERSONAL:
Personal qualifications include motivation to become an active member of the health care team. Responsibility, reliability, cooperative spirit and good judgment are all important attributes for considered. An interest in science, allied health and an interest in histology preferred.

3. Foreign degree transcripts accompanied by a U.S. degree equivalency evaluation. Foreign degree transcript evaluation must show break down of subject and subject grades. We do not accept international students. Our program not recognized by immigrations.
4. Submit references from two undergraduate academic science faculty members or one from a science faculty member and one from an employer. Please have evaluator use the enclosed evaluation form. Evaluations from friends and relatives are NOT ACCEPTABLE. General Letters of recommendation are NOT ACCEPTABLE

DISMISSAL POLICY:
Any of the following may cause immediate dismissal:
1. Drinking alcohol, intoxication, smoking, gambling and drug abuse on hospital or laboratory premises.
2. Falsification of records in areas of responsibility
3. Excessive absenteeism/tardiness
4. Grade below 78% in any clinical experience rotation
5. Acts of insubordination
6. Any act that may endanger others
7. Failure to follow safety policies and procedures
8. Failure to follow DMC/DMCUL policies and procedures
9. Failure to follow confidentiality policies
10. In appropriate use of DMC/DMCUL computer systems
APPEAL PROCEDURE:
Any dismissal, except grades below 2.5 appealed to the Appeals Committee consisting of the Program Director, Education Coordinator, Medical Advisor and or an appointee. The student shall have the opportunity to speak on his/her own behalf.
A student dropping out on his/her own accord and wishing readmission, must reapply.
The School of Histotechnology faculty has specified the following nonacademic criteria (essential functions) which all applicants expected to meet in order to participate in the professional practice.
1. Observation: The applicant must be able to participate actively in all demonstrations and clinical laboratory experience in the professional program.
2. Communication: The applicant must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently transmit information to patients, fellow students, faculty and staff, and all members of the health care team.
3. Motor: The applicant must have sufficient motor function to be able to perform clinical laboratory procedures that require lifting, bending, and stooping motions. In addition, the student must be able to demonstrate manual dexterity on the handling of small or delicate items.
4. Intellectual/Conceptual, Integrative Quantities and Abilities: The applicant must possess the emotional health required for full utilization of the application of intellectual ability, the exercise of good judgment, the prompt completion of all responsibilities, and the development of mature, sensitive, and effective relationships with patients, fellow students, faculty, staff, and all members of the health care team. Applicants must also be able to tolerate taxing workloads, function effectively under stress, adapt to changing environment, display flexibility, and learn to function in the face of uncertainties inherent in clinical laboratory problems. Compassion, integrity, concern for others, interest and motivation are personal qualities which each applicant should possess.

The clinical experience curriculum consists of 32 weeks. Instruction provides in a technologically advanced laboratory, and in a modern classroom. Students have written and practical examinations. The student evaluates his/her clinical experience.
The student receives a certificate upon completion of the clinical program and satisfies the requirements for certification exams in Histotechnology by ASCP.

ORIENTATION
Include presentation and discussion of student policies and procedure, student grading and practical evaluation system, presentation and discussion on laboratory safety and specimen collection.
LECTURE SERIES
Comprise instrumentation, processing, embedding, microtomy, fixation, and special stains.
SEMINARS
Topics of discussion include laboratory safety, quality control, continuous quality improvement, laboratory accreditation, laboratory organization and management, labor relations, risk management, preparing objectives, test construction, evaluation and problem solving, and use of audio visual aids.
THE PROGRAM CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AND CURRICULUM
The DMCUL School of Histotechnology clinical rotation in accessioning, distribution, tissue processing (both microwave and routine), embedding, microtome, automatic and manual staining, special staining, Cytopreparatory techniques and frozen sections. The curriculum consists of the following: Fixation, Processing, Instrumentation, Safety, Laboratory Mathematics and solution preparation, Nuclear and Cytoplasmic Staining, Carbohydrates and Amyloid, Connective and Muscle Tissue, Nerve, Microorganisms, Pigments, Minerals and Cytoplasmic Granules, Immunohistochemistry, Enzyme Histochemistry, and Cytopreparatory Techniques.
The DMC is a well diversity campus, given the student first hand in many of the special arena such as: muscle and kidney biopsies studies, and immunohistochemistry.

ADMISSION COMMITTEE
The Admission Committee is composed of Program Director, Education Coordinator, Medical Director, and supervisors, and meets to review, select, and rank completed applications for admission.
Applicants are required to have an Associate Degree in Applied Science or higher, GPA of 2.8/4.0 or higher and a Math/Science GPA of 2.8/4.0 or higher, Individuals with less than 2.8 and 2.8 respectively. The following factors considered in the selection process:
