Rotations

There are 12 months of inpatient rotations on the General, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) services. Six months are completed during PGY 2, and three months per academic year during PGY 3 and 4. Residents will gain valuable clinical exposure to TBI including minimally conscious patients, stroke, SCI, burns, amputee care, organ transplants, mechanical heart pump implants (LVADs), cancer rehabilitation, post-traumatic care, and post-operative orthopedics.

  • Inpatient Rotations:
  • Inpatient Consults:
    • Inpatient consults in DMC Affiliated Hospitals on Central Campus x 3 months
  • Outpatient:
    • Outpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Clinics at RIM x 2 months
      • Experience with TBI, SCI, general PM&R, Pain, Electromyography (EMGs), amputees, interventional spine and ultrasound procedures, neurotoxin (i.e. Botox) injections, Baclofen pumps
    • Outpatient PM&R Clinics at private offices x 5 months
      • Experience with EMGs, interventional spine, regenerative medicine, ultrasound procedures, interdisciplinary spine clinic, subacute rehabilitation
    • Pain Management at RIM x 1 month
    • Sports Medicine Clinic with DMC x 1 month
      • Associated with DMC Sports Medicine fellowship. Experience with Tenex, regenerative medicine, and US guided injections.
    • Pediatric Rehabilitation on DMC campus x 2 month
      • Inpatient pediatric rehabilitation, outpatient PM&R clinic and multidisciplinary clinics with exposure to neurotoxin injections and Baclofen pumps
    • Prosthetics & Orthotics at outpatient offices x 4 weeks
    • Therapy at RIM/outpatient clinics x 2 weeks
    • Neuroradiology on DMC campus x 2 weeks
    • Rheumatology Clinic on DMC campus x 1 month
    • Orthopedics Outpatient on DMC campus x 1 month
    • Neurology Outpatient on DMC campus x1 month
      • Experience with EMGs
  • Continuity Clinic:
    • Starting in October 2021. Will occur weekly in the afternoon and allow residents to become more confident in their outpatient skills. It consists of patients that residents have discharged from their inpatient services.
  • Dedicated EMG:
    • John D. Dingell VA Medical Center on DMC campus x 2 months
  • Electives:
    • 3 months
    • Examples: Interventional spine, pain medicine, sports medicine, pediatric PM&R, variety of outpatient PM&R clinics, musculoskeletal radiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, palliative medicine, urology, research. We allow residents to pursue non-DMC electives in addition to examples listed.
