Rotations by Training Year

  • First year: Six months of inpatient rotations (inpatient oncology- three months, inpatient malignant hematology/WBC- one month, benign hematology consultation- one month, inpatient bone marrow transplantation/cellular therapy- one month). Six months of outpatient subspecialty clinics.
  • Second year: Four months of inpatient rotations (inpatient oncology-two months, inpatient malignant hematology/WBC- one month, benign hematology consultation- one month). Eight months of outpatient subspecialty clinics.
  • Third year: Schedule is personalized according to the clinical and academic interests of each fellow.

Continuity clinic: Fellows will have malignant hematology (Dresner) and oncology (Wertz) continuity clinics at Karmanos, that alternate one day per week for the duration of their fellowship. Continuity clinics provide the fellows with a valuable opportunity to take ownership of their patients while ensuring adequate supervision from faculty.

Outpatient clinics/multidisciplinary teams: Fellows will rotate through malignant hematology, benign hematology, bone marrow transplantation/cellular therapy, breast, lung/thoracic, head and neck, gastrointestinal/neuroendocrine, and genitourinary oncology clinics.

Electives: Research, hematopathology/blood bank, neuro-oncology, gynecological oncology, and pediatric hematology/oncology electives can be pursued based on individual interests.

Research: One month of research for the first two years each and flexible research time in the third year. All of our fellows engage in clinical research under the mentorship of our clinical faculty. We have a monthly research conference which serves as a platform to share research ideas and practice presentations for national meetings. Many of our fellows present at ASH, ASTCT, ASCO, GU-ASCO and other national meetings.
