Message from the Chief Residents
Welcome to the DMC Anesthesiology Residency Program, located in the heart of Detroit, where cultural diversity comes together for premier medical care.
Our residency program consists of approximately 10 MD residents per year and is a 4 year program, offering a transitional year with a great mix of surgical and medical training. We also have the great opportunity of working with Michigan State University's DO Anesthesiology Residency in our clinical anesthesia years where we form a larger but close-knit family.
During your experience at the DMC, you will have a wide array of exposure to cardiothoracic, minimally invasive, ambulatory, emergency, trauma, neurosurgical, pediatric, and bariatric surgeries among many others with excellent training in intensive care, perioperative medicine, pain management, obstetric and regional anesthesia. This residency has a heavy emphasis on clinical training in challenging clinical scenarios and in newly renovated, state-of-the-art facilities with a brand new Cardiovascular Institute. Our didactic curriculum is efficient, effective, and ever evolving, and we are proud to boast a 100% pass rate on the written Board for the past three years with many of our residents pursuing competitive fellowships.
In your residency, you will have the opportunity to rotate through over 10 DMC hospitals and surgical centers spread over the Detroit Metro area, giving you a diverse experience and teaching you adaptability to different environments and patient populations. Starting off as an anesthesiologist can be challenging, so you will have the chance to shadow and learn anesthesia safely during the final month of your intern year before gaining comfort in the OR with the fundamental skills of anesthesia. This unique transition is one our residents love. Your second year will hone in on subspecialty training with increasingly complex cases and introduce you to intraoperative TEE while your third year allows you to enjoy the role of junior faculty, managing resident cases while also focusing on your unique career path, molding your electives and research to where your interests lie. All the while, weekly didactics are aimed at written and oral board preparation, with the help of world renowned guest speakers, journal club meetings, and our state-of-the-art educational simulator center.
From our brilliant group of core devoted faculty to all our residents and fellows across the years, we are a close community of colleagues and friends and are very lucky to be in a fun and friendly work environment that fosters learning. Although we have many facilities, thanks to working with a great team of nurse anesthetists and ancillary staff, we are able to enjoy a balance of work and recreational time. So whether you enjoy Michigan's great outdoors, wineries, jazz festivals or Red Wings and Tigers games, we hope you'll find a great home in our program and here in Detroit.
