Dontae's Story: Minimally invasive mitral valve replacement surgery

Jan 28, 2022
Dontae had stroke symptoms and was rushed to the ER. An infection had damaged his heart and moved to his brain. The mitral valve in his heart was failing and could cause another stroke. The DMC cardiothoracic surgeon and heart team replaced Dontae’s mitral valve using a minimally invasive procedure. Compared to traditional open-heart surgery, this minimally invasive technique resulted in smaller incisions, less pain, and a quicker recovery. Dontae was discharged home within a few days and recovered quickly, allowing him to spend time with his children and return to work to provide for his family.
