Urology is the field of medicine that focuses on the urinary tracts of males and females and on the reproductive system of males. The organs covered by urology include the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra and the male reproductive organs.
The discipline combines management of medical problems, such as urinary infections, and surgical problems, such as the correction of congenital abnormalities, and the surgical management of cancers. Abnormalities within the genital region are called genitourinary disorders.
Urodynamics is the study of the pressure within the urinary system and urologists often use diagnostic techniques such as flow cystometry or ambulatory urodynamic profiles to determine the best method of treatment for the patient.
Urologists also treat cancer, incontinence, pediatric urology, sexual dysfunction and male infertility.

DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University Hospital and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital are both ranked among the best hospitals in Southeast Michigan in Urology by U.S.News & World Report.

Since the year 2000, Detroit Medical Center has been the region’s specialty referral center for reconstructive urology and urethral stricture surgery. With thousands of patients across the country requiring very specific and intricate reconstructive urological surgeries each year, DMC is poised to meet the needs of these patients in the Midwest by expanding its reconstructive urology program.
The DMC Center for Urologic Reconstruction is led by Dr. Richard Santucci, Detroit Receiving's chief of urology. Dr. Santucci is one of the few Fellowship-trained reconstructive urologists in the country. He completed his clinical Fellowship with Dr. Jack McAninch at the University of California—San Francisco, and a basic science Fellowship sponsored by the National Institutes of Health at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Dr. Santucci and his team perform over 60 complex urologic reconstruction surgeries a year.

-
Prevention/risk assessment

The DMC Kidney Stone Center is led by Dr. Jason Wynberg, FACS, a board certified urologist with extensive experience in the medical and surgical treatment of kidney stones. He is highly skilled in all urologic procedures, including robotic surgery, laser surgery, and advanced kidney stone surgery. He has several patents pending in the areas of surgical device development, CT scan technology, and cell-based cancer therapy.
Our entire team works together to help identify and treat the specific causes of kidney stones and prevent stone recurrence. As a DMC Kidney Stone Center patent, once a complete evaluation has been performed you will receive a comprehensive management plan to minimize stone recurrence and/or growth.
Several clinical and non-clinical research studies are currently underway in the DMC Kidney Stone Center.
-
Low-dose radiation CT Scans – Researchers at DMC Harper University Hospital and Wayne State University are studying the effectiveness of low-dose radiation CT scans in the evaluation of kidney stone patients. It is hoped that in a short time we will be able to offer dramatically reduced radiation dosages for kidney stone CT scans.
-
New PCNL Technique – Using a surgical device he modified and patented, Dr Jason Wynberg is studying a new technique for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL). It is believed that this new technique will reduce radiation exposure to patients, improve stone-free rates and reduced time in hospital.
