September 25, 2008- DMC, STATE OF MICHIGAN, LEAD NATION IN HOSPITAL QUALITY IN NEWLY RELEASED LEAPFROG RANKINGS
DETROIT—The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) today became the only health system in the nation to place 4 hospitals in the Leapfrog Group’s 2008 Top Hospital list for patient quality and safety. The State of Michigan as a whole placed 7 hospitals in the top 33 in the US, more than any other state. California was 2nd with 6 Leapfrog Hospitals.
The Leapfrog Group is the nation’s premier quality ranking agency, acting on behalf of many of the nation's Fortune 500 companies which came together to improve hospital quality.
The Leapfrog group identified 33 hospitals, (26 adult and 7 pediatric) which have achieved the highest level for quality and safety practices and have been named 2008 “Leapfrog Top Hospitals”. The Leapfrog Group rankings are based on a survey conducted at 1,220 hospitals across the country and is considered the most complete and current assessment of hospital quality and safety available.
DMC’s Detroit Receiving Hospital, Harper-Hutzel Hospital, Sinai-Grace Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Michigan were selected as Leapfrog Top Hospitals.
“These findings clearly indicate that DMC sets the standard in the State of Michigan and across the U.S. for quality healthcare,” said Dr. Iris Taylor, president of Detroit Receiving Hospital. “We take the business of saving people’s lives very seriously and it’s an honor to be recognized by the top leaders of America.”
The Leapfrog survey collects data from hospitals on their progress and commitment toward implementing practices in four major categories: Computerized Physician Order Entry: Do physicians enter patient prescriptions and other orders into computers linked to error prevention software; ICU Physician Staffing: Are intensive care units staffed by trained ICU specialists (intensivists); Evidenced-Based Hospital Referral: How well do hospitals perform seven high-risk procedures and Leapfrog Safe Practices Score: How well are hospitals progressing in 13 National Quality Forum-endorsed Safe Practices.
This is the second consecutive year that multiple DMC hospitals have been selected as Leapfrog Top Hospitals. In 2007, Harper-Hutzel Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Michigan were both selected as Leapfrog Top Hospitals based on their quality and safety scores.
