The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals report, now in its 24th year, recognizes hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients, and is widely regarded as a standard of excellence in patient care.
Death rates, patient safety, and hospital reputation were a few of the factors considered. Only 148 hospitals were nationally ranked in one or more specialties, DMC Harper University Hospital is among those institutions that met that performance standard. DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital all received high honors in multiple specialties.
"We are pleased to be recognized again by U.S. News and World Report. These rankings exemplify the depth of the quality and specialty care that patients receive every day at our hospitals which would not be possible without our world-class team of physicians and clinical staff," said CEO Joe Mullany, Detroit Medical Center.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International; a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands August 27.
