Neurology

Exceptional patient care. Groundbreaking research. Internationally recognized physicians. The Department of Neurology at Detroit Medical Center is considered Michigan’s top Neurosciences program…and one of the best in the nation.

Neurological researchers and clinicians at Wayne State, DMC Harper University Hospital and DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital are making dramatic strides in the treatment and management of neurological diseases and disorders. Depending on the specific case, the neurology team calls on specialists from a wide variety of disciplines to provide the right care at the right time.

What Is Neurology?

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Physicians specializing in the field of neurology are called neurologists and are trained to diagnose, treat and manage patients with neurological disorders, as well as some conditions in the musculoskeletal system.

Common neurology disorders include Stroke, Epilepsy, Dementia, Headache and Migraine.

U.S.News & World Report considers DMC Harper University Hospital's Neurosciences program one of the best in the nation. The magazine named Harper one of "America's Best Hospitals" for 2013-14— ranking it #21 in Neurology and Neurosurgery.

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital is ranked among the best in Neurology & Neurosurgery in Southeast Michigan by
U.S.News & World Report.

What is a Neurologist?

A neurologist is a medical doctor who treats diseases of the brain and nerves, also known as neurological diseases. Neurologists do not perform surgery. They diagnose and treat diseases using careful clinical examinations and neurological testing and treatment. When surgery is needed, a patient is referred to a surgeon.

Neurologists are usually certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Neurologists can treat adults or children. A neurologist that treats children needs additional training in pediatrics and the neurological diseases of children.

Major conditions include:

  • Headache disorders such as migraine, cluster headache and tension headache
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amylotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • Cerebrovascular disease, such as transient ischemic attack and stroke
  • Sleep disorders
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Infections of the brain (encephalitis), brain meninges (meningitis) and spinal cord (myelitis)
  • Growths or tumors of the brain, spinal cord or the peripheral nerves
  • Movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease
  • Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis, and of the peripheral nervous system, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Spinal cord disorders, such as tumors, infections, trauma and malformations
  • Disorders of peripheral nerves, muscles and neuromuscular junctions
  • Traumatic injuries to the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves
  • Altered mental status, encephalopathy, stupor and coma
