DMC Imaging Prep Info

X-ray & Fluoroscopy Exam Preparation

X-rays are available on a walk-in basis and no appointment is required.

 

Fluoroscopy exams can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500)

Important: The procedure preparations listed DO NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN.

You should ALWAYS check with your physician before stopping any of your medications.

Arthrogram

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

 

Barium Enema OR Gastrografin Enema

Preparation:

Purchase prior to starting preparation:

1) Osmotic laxative (e.g. Miralax 8.3 oz bottle or the 10-single dose box)

2) Stimulant laxative (e.g. Dulcolax tablets)

**Generic brands may be used.  No prescription is required for laxatives.

3) Oral rehydration beverage 64 oz. (e.g. Gatorade, Propel Fitness Water) – No red or purple beverages

 

Day before exam:

  • Drink only clear liquids –no solid foods, milk or milk products. No carbonated beverages (Coke or Pepsi) OR alcoholic beverages.
  • At 3:00 pm take 2 stimulant laxative tablets (Dulcolax)
  • At 5:00 pm, mix oral rehydration beverage (Gatorade) and a single dose of osmotic laxative (Miralax). Shake until dissolved. Start drinking 8 oz. of the mix every 10 minutes until it is finished.  If you’re nauseous you can drink mix slowly.  Walking around may relieve some of the nausea. 
  • You will begin having diarrhea usually within 1-2 hours. Although this is unpleasant, it allows your physician to perform a thorough exam. If the laxative has not started to work within 5 hours, call the physician – you may need to reschedule.
  • At 8:00 pm take another 2 stimulant laxative tablets (Dulcolax)

Note: Failure to follow these instructions may result in a repeat prep and examination. 

 

Esophagram (Barium Swallow, Modified Barium Study, Cookie Study)

Preparation: On the day prior to your appointment, have a light evening meal.  Do not eat anything after midnight the night before the exam.  You may have water in moderation.

Hysterosalpingiogram

Preparation: Exam is to be scheduled between 7 to 14 days after the first day of your last menstrual period.

 

IVP/Nephrotomogram

Preparation: Take 2 stimulant laxative tablets ( e. g. Dulcolax tablets) the night before the examination. Do not eat anything after 10:00 pm the night before the exam. You may have water in moderation.

 

Myelogram/Lumbar Puncture

 

Preparation: Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam.

Note:  If you take blood thinners, check with your physician, as you may need to stop taking your  medication for a few days.

 

Small Bowel

Preparation: On the day prior to your appointment, have a light evening meal.  Do not eat anything after midnight the night before the exam.  You may have water in moderation.

 

Upper GI

Preparation:

  • Appointments scheduled before 12:00 noon; Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam. 
  • Appointments scheduled in the afternoon; Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before your exam.  On the day prior to your appointment, have a light evening meal.

Note:  A mild laxative may be taken after exam is complete.

 

Upper GI and Small Bowel

Preparation:

  • Appointments scheduled before 12:00 noon; Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam. 
  • Appointments scheduled in the afternoon; Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before your exam.  On the day prior to your appointment, have a light evening meal.

Note:  A mild laxative may be taken after exam is complete.


Venogram

Preparation: Do not eat or drink for 2 hours prior to your exam.

Note:  If you take blood thinners, check with your physician, as you may need to stop taking your  medication for a few days.


CT Scan Exam Preparation

CT scans are available within 72 hours of request, with proper referral and insurance approvals.

CT scans can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

Important: The preparations listed DO NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN.

You should ALWAYS check with your physician before stopping any of your medications.


Abdomen/Pelvis With Contrast

Preparation:

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 2 hours prior to your appointment.
  • An IV will placed into the arm and radiology contrast will be injected.

Note:  This exam will take 2 hours. Upon your arrival you may be asked to drink contrast.

Do not schedule any upper or lower GI examinations for 1 week prior to this examination.


Calcium Scoring

Preparation:  No preparation is needed.


CCTA
(Cardiac CT Angiography)

Preparation:

  • No caffeine for 24 hrs prior to the exam.
  • Nothing to eat or drink for 2 hours before your appointment
  • You may take medications with small sips of water. If you are taking erectile dysfunction medications (e.g. Viagra, Levitra, Cialis) you must stop taking this for 24 hours before and after your examination.

Notes: You will need to arrive one hour early for monitoring and possible lab work.

Patients with pacemakers or defibrillators, please contact CT department.

Preparation:

  • The day prior to the exam, drink an extra liter (750ml) of a non-alcoholic carbonated beverage (e.g. soda pop).
  • IF YOU ARE A DIALYSIS PATIENT “DO NOT DRINK THE EXTRA LITER OF BEVERAGE”.
  • Nothing to eat or drink for 2 hours prior to your appointment.

Preparation:

  • On the day prior to your appointment, have a light evening meal.
  • Do not eat anything after midnight the night before your exam. 
  • You may have water in moderation.
  • Notes: Length of exam is 2 hours.

MRI & MRA Exam Preparation

 

MRI/MRA exams are available within 72 hours of request, with proper referral and insurance approvals.

MRI MRCP or ABDOMEN

Preparation:  Do not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to the exam.

MRI BREAST (including patients with breast implants)

Preparation: None

Notes:  Your appointment needs to be scheduled 10 to 13 days after the first date of your last menstrual period.  If you are taking estrogen, check with your physician – it is recommended that you stop taking estrogen for 6 weeks prior to your appointment.  Please bring your current mammogram and breast ultrasound, if these exams were performed at another facility.

MRI ALL OTHER EXAMS: No preparation is needed.



Ultrasound Exam Preparation

Ultrasound can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

You should ALWAYS check with your physician before stopping any of your medications.


Abdomen

Preparation:

  • Appointments scheduled before 12:00 noon; Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam.

  • You may take medications with small sips of water.

Note: If you are diabetic or have concerns about not eating for this length of time, please contact your physician.

 

Aorta

Preparation:

  • Appointments scheduled before 12:00 noon; Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam. 
  • Appointments scheduled in the afternoon; Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before your exam. 
  • You may take medications with small sips of water.

Note: If you are diabetic or have concerns about not eating for this length of time, please contact your physician. 

 

Arterial

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

 

Biopsy Procedures

Note:  You will be given specific instructions by the radiology department. 


Breast

Preparation: Bring your most recent mammogram with you if it was performed at a different facility.


Carotid

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

 

Pelvis

Preparation:

  • Finish drinking 32 ounces of water one hour before the exam and do not urinate. You must have a full  bladder at time of the exam. 
  • IF YOU ARE ON DIALYSIS, DO NOT DRINK WATER.

 
Prostate

Purchase prior to starting preparation:

  • Prepackaged saline enema (e.g. Simple Fleets Enema)
  • Contact your physician to give you a prescription for oral antibiotics (e.g. Cipro) if a biopsy is to be done at the time of the ultrasound.

Preparation:

  • Take oral antibiotic as directed.
  • Follow package instructions on saline enema use 1 hour prior to exam.

Notes: If you will be having a biopsy procedure, you must be off blood thinners for 5 days, prior to your appointment.   Please check with your physician before stopping your medications. You will be given specific instructions by the radiology department.

 

Renal/KIDNEY/BLADDER

Preparation:

  • Drink 24 ounces of water one hour prior to your exam and do not urinate.  You must have a full bladder at time of the exam.  
  • IF YOU ARE ON DIALYSIS, DO NOT DRINK WATER 


Scrotum

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Thyroid

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

 Venous

Preparation: No preparation is needed.



Mammography Exam Preparation

Mammograms can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

Mammography

Preparation: Bring your most recent mammogram with you if it was performed at a different facility. On the day of your exam, please do not use any underarm powders, deodorants or lotions.



Bone Density Exam Preparation

Bone Density (DEXA) can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

Important: The procedure preparations listed DO NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN.

Bone Density (DEXA Scan)

Preparation:  Do not take a calcium pill on the day of the exam.

Note:  Bone density exams may not be covered by your insurance company if you have had` a previous exam performed within the last 2 years.



PET/CT Exam Preparation

PET/CT can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

Important: The procedure preparations listed DO NOT APPLY TO CHILDREN.

PET/CT

Preparation:

  • Do not eat, drink or chew gum six hours prior to the exam, but you may drink water and take your medication. Do not take liquid medications that maybe in syrup form.
  • If you are diabetic, please eat a light, low-carb meal and take your insulin or oral medication 6 hours prior to your appointment time.
  • No strenuous exercise 24 hours before exam.

Note:  Wear comfortable clothing. Your exam may require you to change into a hospital gown. Please plan to spend two to three hours with us for the entire procedure. Please arrive promptly at your appointment time. We allow for 30 minutes of preparation time before the scan begins.



Nuclear Medicine Exam Preparation

 

Nuclear Medicine can be scheduled by contacting 888-DMC-2500 (888-362-2500).

You should ALWAYS check with your physician before stopping any of your medications.

Bone Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes:  A bone scan and a MUGA scan must be scheduled 48 hours apart.  This is a two-part exam. During the first part of the exam, you will receive an injection of a radiopharmaceutical and will take 10-15 minutes. You will then return 3 hours later for additional scanning which will last approximately 60 minutes.  

 
Brain SPECT

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: If your exam is with and without Diamox, two appointments will be needed 48 hours apart. The length of each appointment is 1 ½ to 2 hours.

 
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) Medication Stress Exam

Preparation: 

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your exam.
  • No caffeine products (coffee tea, chocolate) for 24 hrs before your appointment. 
  • You may take your blood pressure medication with small sips of water.

 

Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) Treadmill Stress Exam

Preparation: 

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your exam.
  • No caffeine products (coffee tea, chocolate) for 24 hrs before your appointment. 
  • You may take your blood pressure medication with small sips of water.

Note: Wear comfortable clothing/shoes.

  

Gallium Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: This exam will be scheduled to start on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Based on your reason for your exam, the exam will take 3 days to complete.  You will receive an injection on day 1 and then you will return to the department on day 2 and day 3 for scanning.  Your scan will take approximately 1 hour.   

 

Gastric Empty

Preparation: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam.

HIDA Scan Gallbladder

Preparation: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam.

Note:  Exam can take 2 to 4 hours to complete.

 

Liver Hemangioma Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: Length of exam is 2-3 hours to complete.

 

Lung (V/Q) Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: Length of exam is one hour to complete. 

 

MUGA-Rest

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: Length of exam is one hour to complete. A bone scan and a MUGA scan must be scheduled 48 hours apart.  

  

Parathyroid Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Notes: Length of exam is approximately 3 hours to complete.

  

Renal Scan

Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Note:  Length of exam is approximately 1 hour to complete.

 

Renal Scan (Captopril)

Preparation: Please contact your physician if you are taking any blood pressure medications.  ACE inhibitor medications can not be taken the day of exam.

Notes: Length of exam takes 1 ½ hours to complete.


Thyroid Uptake and Scan

Preparation:  Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before your exam.

Note:  No radiology IV contrast 6 weeks prior to exam.  Please contact your physician if you are taking any thyroid medications.  Patient should not take thyroid medication 6 weeks prior to exam or anti-thyroid medication 1 week prior to exam. 

 

White Blood Cell Scan
Preparation: No preparation is needed.

Note:  Exam will take 1-2 days to complete.
