Women’s Health Initiative

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is a major 15-year research program to address the most common causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women – cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. Hutzel Women’s Hospital and Wayne State University are participating in the study through a prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant.

The study has already changed the way physicians think about common menopause treatments. Until recently, most women going through menopause were prescribed hormone therapy to minimize symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. But in July 2002 – thanks in part to research at Hutzel and Wayne State University – preliminary results of the Women’s Health Initiative showed that hormone therapy increased the risk of many deadly diseases and dementia.
