Is this the first time DMC has been involved in the fellowship program?
No. DMC is experienced in fellowship programs. As an academic and research institution, each year scores of clinicians complete fellowships practicing at DMC. In addition, DMC had administrative fellows throughout the system between 1992 – 1998. During that time, over 15 fellows honed their strategic and analytical skills with the coaching of DMC leadership. Some DMC fellows took DMC employment opportunities upon completion of their fellowship. Others are administrators of leading health systems throughout the region and country. In 2007, DMC reestablished an administrative fellow program, as part of the total system innovation and rebirth. Since the reintroduction of the program additional fellows and interns have gotten their experience at DMC, bringing our total fellow/intern alumni to 29.
There could be no better time to be a leader, in a health system that offers medical solutions that others cannot, through our specialty hospitals.
What type of exposure do fellows have to DMC senior leadership?
The DMC leadership team serves as the mentors for our fellows. Mentor is an active role, with the mentor (at the hospital and corporate level) serving as the key resource person to the fellow. In addition, as the fellow attends and participates in DMC senior management standing and ad hoc meetings throughout the fellowship, they have ongoing dialogue with the various leaderships and build relationships that will become part of the professional network they will build throughout their career. The DMC leadership team is one of the most seasoned and varied in the country, so a fellow could not have a better opportunity!
What is the selection process for DMC fellows?
Qualified applicants can express their interest in DMC fellowship positions by applying on-line at www.dmc.org/jobs, and searching by requisition #, beginning in August, 2010. The exact selection process will vary depending on what is most convenient for the applicant, but will include the following elements:
If at any time in the process you have questions, please contact Fellowship Recruiter Janet Hash, firstname.lastname@example.org, or 313/578-2368 or DMC Fellowship Program Director Paul Sturgis, email@example.com, or 313/578-2842.
How structured is the program?
Just right. DMC has developed a basic framework within which fellow’s can define their specific learning path based on the strengths, experiences and learning objectives that they bring to the fellowship. The DMC framework includes experienced preceptors, regular conferences with DMC leadership, projects that provide hands on learning, fellow leadership opportunities, established fellow feedback schedule, regular fellow networking and ongoing fellow and program evaluation and adjustment.
What part does the preceptor play in the program?
The preceptor is the key resource person to the fellow, for refining objectives and charting the course to achieve those objectives. The preceptor provides strategic and technical expertise in healthcare administration. In addition, the preceptor provides networking contacts and resources within the DMC, and the broader healthcare community. The fellow/preceptor relationship is primary to a successful fellow experience which is a continuation of the fellow learning from, and making contributions to, the DMC. The DMC preceptor selections have been made with that in mind.
Will I be offered employment upon completion of the fellowship?
An objective of the DMC administrative fellowship program is to identify and develop visionary leaders for the future. The term of the fellowship is one year, and does not include a guarantee, or a requirement, of continued employment. Yet, the fellowship provides a unique opportunity for the fellow and DMC leadership to consider future employment. DMC will give full consideration to those fellows who express interest in healthcare leadership vacancies that become available, welcoming the benefits of continuing our relationship.
