Chair and Director: George Murakawa, M.D., Ph.D.
The Department of Dermatology, established in 1937, is an academic program of both Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center. The clinical component of the program currently consists of three major outpatient clinic sites (University Dermatology at University Health Center, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and Children's Hospital) and inpatient services that cover the 5 hospitals of the Detroit Medical Center. An average of 24,000 outpatient visits, 50 inpatient admissions, 900 inpatient consultations, and 3,500 biopsy specimens are performed annually. Patient Care: The Department of Dermatology treats all diseases of the skin, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin infections, skin cancers, and hair loss. The Department also provides a wide range of dermatological and cosmetic surgeries. Education: A major component of the Department's academic mission is to teach medical students, non-dermatology residents, and dermatology residents. The faculty teaches the dermatology portion of the second-year medical student course, Pathophysiology: Connective Tissue. Clinical and research dermatology electives are offered to senior students and residents from other specialties. The Department maintains a 3-year Dermatology residency training program to educate and produce future dermatologists. Research: The Department's clinical and laboratory research focuses on a variety of dermatologic diseases. Laboratory-based research opportunities include studies in bacterial pathogenesis (Staphylococcus aureus) and keratinocyte biology. In an effort to establish new therapies and cutting edge technology, the Department is also actively engaged in clinical trials.
We look forward to serving our community in all of their dermatological needs.
