With a complete array of cosmetic and plastic surgical services, non-surgical services and physician grade skin care, the Detroit Medical Center can help you look and feel your best.

Breast Augmentation, Reduction or Lift: A surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breast for personal reasons. It can also be used to balance a difference in breast size, reconstruct a breast following surgery or correct deformities.

Endoscopic Brow Lift:
Uses a less-invasive technique than traditional brow lifts to create a more-youthful appearance. An endoscope, or flexible tube, is used during surgery, allowing smaller incisions and faster healing. It is especially helpful for patients with insufficient hair to conceal scarring. Because this procedure requires such small incisions, side effects are reduced.

Eyelid Surgery:
Called blepharoplasty, this procedure removes fat and excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes that make you look older and may even interfere with your vision. However, it won’t remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles or lift sagging eyebrows. Eyelid surgery can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures, such as facelift or browlift.

Nose Surgery:
Also called rhinoplasty, nasal surgery may be performed for cosmetic purposes or to improve both form and function. It can alleviate nasal breathing problems or correct deformities from birth or injury.

Face or Neck Lift:
As people age, the effects of gravity, sun exposure and stress can be seen in their faces. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth, the jaw line grows slack and jowly and folds and fat deposits appear around the neck. A facelift can turn back the clock, improving the most visible signs of aging. It can remove excess fat, tighten muscles and re-drape the skin. A facelift can be done alone or with other procedures, such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery or nose reshaping.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL): Combines new patented technology with advanced surgical techniques to sculpt the body and remove unwanted fat deposits. UAL uses ultrasound energy to break up and emulsify fat, leaving surrounding nerves, blood vessels and tissue relatively intact. Patients report minimal pain and bruising. Because of the technology used, physicians can work with such precision that they can shape delicate areas like the inner thighs, arms, chin and neck.

Vaser®-Assisted High-Definition Liposculpturing (VAHDL): For patients who already have a high degree of fitness, but want a more chiseled, athletic look. DMC Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Specialist Dr. Bruce Chau is one of only five surgeons in the country trained to perform VAHDL. The procedure uses the Vaser® ultrasound-assisted liposuction equipment, which has been a breakthrough in liposuction because it liquefies the fat, yet doesn't damage the nerves, connective tissue or blood vessels. Dr. Chau has used the Vaser® equipment for two years and has performed liposuction for more than 15 years.

“The VAHDL gives patients a more chiseled, athletic look by enhancing the visibility of well-toned muscles,” Dr. Chau says. “VAHDL isn't for everyone, but is best suited to highly motivated people who have some degree of fitness already. Men are especially interested in this procedure to get ‘six-pack abs.’"

Tummy Tuck: Suitable for both men and women, a tummy tuck flattens the abdomen by removing extra fat and skin and tightening muscles in the abdominal wall. The best candidates are those who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women, because of multiple pregnancies, whose abdominal muscles and skin can’t return to normal shape. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved.

Nonsurgical Cosmetic Prcedures
The DMC offers a complete range of nonsurgical cosmetic procedures to help you look and feel your best:
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic
  • BOTOX for Sweating
  • Chemical peel
  • Dermal fillers
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Contour thread lift
  • Latisse
BOTOX® Cosmetic: Gives skin a more youthful appearance by temporarily relaxing and minimizing frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet near the eyes. This treatment is quick and convenient and takes only a few tiny injections. You will see noticeable improvement in moderate to severe lines within days. Results typically last three to four months.

BOTOX for Sweating: Uses for those who suffer from severe underarm sweating. Botox temporarily blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. When the glands don't receive the chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. Botox clocks the production of sweat only in the areas treated, so the body continues to produce sweat elsewhere, as it should. Underarm sweating can be decreased by 90% for the first two days, with the full effect within one week. Treatment takes 10 minutes and lasts six months.

Chemical Peel: Uses a high concentration of glycolic acid to reduce problems of acne-prone skin, acne scars, dry and oily skin, sun-damaged skin, age spots, pigment irregularities and fine wrinkles. A series of peels, given over weeks or months, along with a daily skin care regimen, will slough away the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal softer, smoother skin. Glycolic acid can be used safely on practically all skin types.

Dermal Fillers: As we age, our skin gradually loses structure and volume, and unwelcome lines and wrinkles appear. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to lessen deep folds, plump and smooth the lips, reduce facial lines and correct wrinkles.

Juvederm
- Produced by the makers of Botox® Cosmetic, Juvederm™ contains the highest concentration of non-animal, cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any dermal filler currently available.

“Juvederm gives a smoother, longer-lasting correction than other dermal fillers such as Restylane®,” Dr. Chau says. "Allergan, the producer of Juvederm, states that it is the only dermal filler that has been demonstrated safe for patients of color, causing no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring.”

The treatment is a very easy and takes only 15 to 30 minutes with instant results.

Patients can expect slight redness and minimal swelling for one or two days after the treatment.

Microdermabrasion: A mechanical process that gently abrades or polishes the skin. Skin is refreshed, reducing fine lines, crow’s feet, age spots and acne scars. It also stimulates the production of skin cells and collagen. Best results require five to 12 treatments spaced two to three weeks apart. Use of a light chemical peel will increase the effect. Maintenance of results requires periodic repeat treatments.

Contour Thread Lift: DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital is one of only a few hospitals in the country certified to offer this new nonsurgical procedure. Threads are used to lift and redistribute facial skin. The method is ideal for people who want to improve their faces without having a full facelift. The procedure can be done with local anesthetic and can be adjusted based on the patient’s preference. Ideal for patients who are just beginning to see facial aging or who are uncomfortable with general anesthesia. This minimally invasive procedure offers patients the ability to make subtle improvements at the first signs of aging rather than waiting until more drastic measures are needed.

Latisse® is an eyelash enhancement product. Latisse results have confirmed its effectiveness, and Latisse is the first and the only FDA-approved medication to treat people with the problem of hypotrichosis, a condition where people have far too few eyelashes. Latisse eyelash application gives the users eyelashes that are fuller, longer, thicker, darker, and more luscious. It is sold with a sterile and disposable applicator. The Latisse solution contains an active ingredient called “Bimatoprost” that is well known for its ability to enhance lash growth. It is an FDA-approved drug that was earlier used to treat eye conditions like glaucoma and also to manage ocular pressure.

Sculptra®Aesthetic

Sculptra Aesthetic is a new type of facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, which helps to replace lost collagen. It helps correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles, and folds, that appear with aging by replacing lost collagen. The main ingredient is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades.

Collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin youthful looking and smooth. As you age, your body's collagen production decreases, and you may begin to see wrinkles. Sculptra Aesthetic works to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds,* as it replaces lost collagen, which can help provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance.

Sculptra Aesthetic works to replace lost collagen in a series of treatments administered by a Sculptra trained physician. On average, three injection sessions are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection sessions and the number of injections per session vary from person to person.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

Q: How does laser hair removal work?
A: Laser energy works by targeting melanin, the pigment that is responsible for hair color and for darker or tanned skin tones. When the laser energy reaches the hair follicle, energy is absorbed by the melanin and converted to heat, which stops hair growth.

Q: Does skin tone or hair color affect laser hair removal?
A: Laser hair removal only works when the hair is darker than the surrounding skin. Coarse, dark hair responds the best to laser treatment. With light skin, fewer treatments are required and better results are obtained. Tanned patients should wait until their tan fades before attempting treatment.

The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center has two different lasers, one for fairer skinned patients and one for darker skinned patients. For people with darker skin, results are slower because more sessions are needed.

Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Multiple treatment sessions are necessary to obtain optimal results. Most patients will need six to 10 sessions before they will see permanent results. Darker skinned patients may need up to 15 sessions. Treatments are usually given every three to four weeks. Each patient’s treatment will be designed to match their hair type and skin tone. For any given patient, results cannot be precisely predicted.

Q: How can I find out if I am a candidate for laser hair removal?
A: The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center offers a free consultation with a nurse specially trained in laser hair removal. You can receive a test of a laser treatment to gauge your skin’s reaction.

Q: What areas can be treated with the laser?
Any area except around the eye; including face, underarm, bikini, back, chest and legs.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Prices vary depending on the area being treated, with packages of three and six sessions available, as well as $1 per pulse for small areas. The DMC Sinai-Grace Cosmetic Center offers competitive pricing. However, be aware that, as with all forms of medical care, you should pay attention to quality, not just cost. The Cosmetic Center’s nurses are trained in laser hair removal and supervised by a physician. Our caring, professional staff has a reputation for providing individual attention that will make your experience pleasant.

Q: How can I find out more?

As a whole, regular use of the line exfoliates, hydrates and protects skin.

Jane Iredale Makeup

Known as The Skin Care Makeup, the jane iredale line is so safe and beneficial to use that it is recommended by many plastic surgeons. Jane's line is a highly-sophisticated blend of minerals and pigments that are micro-pulverized, using proprietary technology and processes to form microscopic flat crystals. These crystals overlap each other on the skin to form a filter that allows the skin to breathe and function normally while still protecting it from air-borne pollutants. The staying power of the minerals is so great that they rarely need a touch-up during the day. And because these silky-feeling powders are water resistant, they won't crease or smear even during the most strenuous exercise. These state-of-the-art minerals are available in so many shades that there's one for every complexion no matter what the ethnicity.
