On behalf of the Detroit Medical Center and the patients we serve, please accept our sincere thanks. Your generosity and commitment have helped provide hope, and better health, for thousands of families. With the support of a caring community, all patients treated at the DMC receive the highest quality care and respect, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. These are our friends, our neighbors, maybe even our closest family members. Thank you for taking action and standing by them.
I commend the foundations, corporations, board members, individual donors and volunteers who have supported the DMC, especially in these uncertain economic times. It is your generosity that allows us to improve our hospitals, maintain cutting-edge technology and develop best-practices in medical care.
After much hard work, with your support, the DMC has become a destination healthcare center. For example, as one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals for the third year in a row, we are a leader in the development and implementation of the electronic medical record. We also received the 2009 Innovator Award from Healthcare Informatics for our neonatal barcode scanning initiative which provides a much safer and more accurate way to give medications to premature babies.
Even in the midst of a heathcare crisis, our hospitals are consistently ranked among the very best for safety and quality practices. This year, Harper made its first appearance on the heart and heart surgery list of 2009 “America’s Best Hospitals” survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report, following the introduction last year of Cardio Team One.™ For the third consecutive year, Harper also ranked as a top 50 hospital in neurology & neurosurgery.
Sinai-Grace moved up three spots this year in neurology & neurosurgery, and made its third consecutive appearance as a top 50 hospital for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. Last month, U.S.News once again ranked Children’s Hospital of Michigan as one of America’s top Children’s hospitals for cancer, heart and heart surgery. Children’s Hospital is also the only pediatric hospital in Michigan to have ranked in neurology and neurosurgery and urology.
For these and hundreds of other reasons, this issue of Champions is dedicated to you, the hard-working people who have made the DMC what it is today. Your contribution, large or small, makes a difference.
We at the DMC believe that access to quality healthcare is the right of every human being, not a privilege. Thank you, again, for helping us achieve our mission.
