Stroke Treatment and Research

Stroke Treatment at DMC Harper University Hospital

The Comprehensive Stroke Program at Harper University Hospital, in partnership with Wayne State University, is one of the nation’s top stroke treatment and research programs. The program recently earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. This prestigious certification is granted to stroke care programs that follow strict national standards and guidelines proven to significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients.

Neurologists in the Comprehensive Stroke Program are leading the way in Michigan and nationwide in lowering the risk of stroke, treating acute stroke, preventing recurrent stroke, and helping patients regain skills lost during stroke. At Harper, a vascular neurologist (a neurologist who specializes in stroke) is always available — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — for emergency care of patients with acute stroke.

In addition, as part of an academic research program, Harper patients benefit from leading-edge research into new stroke treatments.

Sinai-Grace can administer medications that dissolve stroke-causing clots and open up clogged brain arteries, reducing damage to the brain. DMC is one of only a few hospital systems in the nation with physicians who also are qualified to administer this medication directly into the clogged brain artery.
