Motor neuron disease is a general term for a group of disorders that affect the motor neurons of the nervous system. These conditions are characterized by a progressive degeneration of the nerve cells that control the behavior of muscles. Depending on which nerves are affected by the disease, motor neuron disease can cause spasms and twitching or muscle weakness and progressive atrophy of the muscles.
