The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) was founded in 1951 to provide exceptional care in physical medicine and rehabilitative services primarily to individuals who contracted polio and to veterans returning from World War II with disabling injuries. While the focus of disability has changed over the years, the mission to provide quality patient care, academic excellence and cutting-edge research in physical medicine and rehabilitation remains the same.
Today RIM is considered a national leader in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. A member of the Detroit Medical Center, RIM is licensed for 94-beds, and treats nearly 1,200 inpatients a year. RIM also operates over 30 outpatients sites throughout southeast Michigan, providing over 180,000 outpatient visits annually.
RIM has built a national reputation for its innovative approach to therapy and progressive treatment techniques. The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation of WSU, located at RIM, is one of the largest departments in the nation. The 56-person faculty consists of physiatrists, psychologists, physicians with other specialties, and other health professionals with advanced rehabilitation training. RIM has been awarded over $16 million in federal and private grants for rehabilitation research focusing on restoring function, improving quality of life and developing innovative therapeutic techniques.
PROGRAMS
The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan's clinical capabilities are broad and diverse. A comprehensive spectrum of both inpatient and outpatient services and programs are available for spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, stroke, cerebral palsy, musculoskeletal disorders, low back problems, amputations, sports injuries, work-related injuries and other medical conditions which require physical rehabilitation.
RIM has become a trusted organization that attracts patients and health care professionals from around the world. While best known for treating the most complex cases such as brain injury, spinal cord injury and stroke, RIM brings the same level of expertise to helping those with more common conditions including arthritis, back pain, and orthopedic and sports injuries.
RIM has built a national reputation for its innovative approach to therapy and progressive treatment techniques. The Institute is home to many cutting-edge programs, including the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 19 federally designated centers of excellence in the U.S. for the treatment of brain injuries, and the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, a world-class facility designed to implement and study innovative treatments in spinal cord injury recovery.
